Simple question but want to know which is faster and more dependable and affordable. DSL or Cable modem.

their are several differences in them both will give u pros and cons of both DSL: Pros: -not slowed down by big neighborhoods - priced reasonably - connection decent cons: -lower speed then cable -ocasionally loses connection -needs dsl filters CAble: Pros: high speed no need for dsl filters cons: - slower in large neighborhoods -expensive

To the slower in large neighborhoods idea. Not if everyone around you has DSL. lol Or like me, Im the only person that uses the comp more then 1 hours a day in my neighborhood.

unfortantly yes :( next one texas. and thats even farther. i live near the 3rd largest city in alabama and we still dont have a good server close to me. i guess thats why my internet is slow sometimes.

To answer to your original question, SMA RealGrunt, its best to ask your neighbors. Cable systems tend to be fine unless they are over populated which happens in some areas, then they develop bottlenecks and you don't get your money's worth compared to DSL. One option would be to go to a nearby library and try speed testing there or ask a local business owner what they use and why. I use DSL myself, which has been marginal dropping connections sometimes and needing a modem reboot about once a day for reasonable performance. I would seriously consider Fiber Optics if I cared about performance or the price came down. We are paying less than $30 / month for AOL bundled with Verizon DSL.
