Internet Connection Issues

Just a couple of days ago my internet started getting really slow, but I could still load up basic web pages and stuff like that. I can't watch YouTube or play Battlefield or download anything within a decent amount of time. I keep trying to diagnose my connection but for some reason the answer keeps changing. These are all the error messages I've seen.

1. The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken.

2. Your Broadband Modem is experiencing connectivity issues.

3. Your computer appears to be correctly configured but the device or service (DNS server) is not responding.

4. Troubleshooting could not identify the problem

I mean seriously its like I'm playing internet connection roulette.

If anybody knows anything about this sort of stuff here are the details of my connection.

Also I don't think it is a problem within my "local loop" seeing as every time I ping my modem in command prompt I come up with 0 latency. Even pinging to websites I get low latency and 0 packet loss so I have no idea what is going on.

Oh yes and I've disconnected modem for like a minute, pressed reset buttons, plugged back in, restarted computer probably about a dozen times and nothing resolves.

your local network is ok i think . Have anyone on your local network same problem? It looks like your provider have some problems. Or Something wrong with your wired connection try check cables or ports or router/switch and look for anything abnormal. If everything ok, contact your internet provider.

can you post here output from in

 command-line:

ipconfig -all

and

I also went to my ISP today and they said that I was connected and it didn't show any issues. Of course they don't know anything because obviously still having the same problem. Its weird too because I have the exact same upload/download speed as I did yesterday and usually they fluctuate at least a little.

From Geek Squads broadband test

Jitter : 24 ms

Packet Loss : 0%

Download Speed : 0.6 Mbps

Upload Speed : 0.6 Mbps

Web Surfing Performance : Poor

Really unacceptable for 55 euro a month.

I have had severe packet loss on my upload stream on my internet connection for the last month going on two. Today a tech came by a gave me a new modem, and replaced the nipple connector connecting to the modem. Unfortunately i am still getting packet loss but it went from 10-30% packet loss on average down to 0-2% on average. Huge difference.

Go here:

http://pingtest.net/

To see your packet loss.

Also while in teamspeak press the middle mouse button on yourself and it will show you a real time gauging of your packet loss.

What is your advertised speeds, what "package" did you get for internet? My ISP says I will get a full refund if my speeds drop below half of the speed I pay for.

My package is a maximum of 6016kbps download and 576kbps upload but it strictly states there is no speed guarantee and that lower speeds don't affect the monthly fee. They also tried to tell me that it was because I'm in the barracks and there are so many other connections it might be why its slowing down. That's a lie of course because nobody else is having similar problems, its basically they have no idea what's wrong so they just come up with excuses.

I probably just need a new modem but I'll have to wait until Monday.

your router and local are ok. As I said before. There is no error in configuration "ipconfig" and from tracert the delay is so hight. f.e. i have 10-14ms from each hop. And as i said before, its your internet servis provider fault.

Well my internet issues seem to be back. I mentioned above that i believed it was fixed with new modem and nipple connector, but i was wrong. After tech changed modem and nipple connector all looked to be well as it appeared i had no packet loss. I played for about 8hours with no issue. Now i am having a constant 20% packet loss on my upload stream.

I'd appreciate any held/advice you guys can give. I will be calling my isp about this, but it took alot of work for them to send a tech in the first place cuz originally they didnt even believe there was a problem. So its going to be abit of work to get them to send over another tech as i'm sure they are going to believe issue should of been fixed with a new modem.

This is a pingtest.net test i just did.

I would check your LAN drivers on your PC which may be faulty.

Also on your router you will have some information that is probably hidden away behind a menu somewhere. The ones you want to look at are your line attenuation, and your SNR(Signal to noise ratio), Transmit power and Receive power. To get to these settings you'll need to get into your router(for me its 10.1.1.1 in the browser). Next you want to go to a Menu that says "Status" or statistics or something along those lines until you find the aforementioned headings. When you do Copy and Paste those and i'll have a look.

Your display may look something like this

ADSL Firmware Version: 7.03.01.00 - 7.03.01.00 - 7.03.01.00 Annex A - 01.07.2c - 0.54

ADSL Software Version: V3.02B01T01.AU-A.20080827

Line State Connected

Modulation ADSL_2plus

Annex Mode Annex A

Max Tx Power -38 dBm/Hz

Item Downstream Upstream Unit

SNR Margin 18 9 dB

Line Attenuation 48 48 dB

Data Rate 2159 403 kbps

If you can find those i can probably help you more. Generally if you've got bad performance in any of those 4 areas you will experience packet loss, high ping, jitter etc. It could be your home wiring is bad, or there is a problem with your connection to the street.

Navi, these numbers are actually all really good, the best I've seen actually.

Did you record these figures while you were experiencing the extreme packet loss?

If you did then thieving's suggestion might hold and it could be a hardware issue on your pc.

If you didn't then take a refreshed reading during the packet loss and re-post.

And also, do you hardwired straight into the modem, or do you use a wireless router?

I forgot to mention this before, but i have had this issue with 3 different computers. Two pc's and 1 mac book pro laptop. All connected directly to modem by a physical wire, no wireless.

I may if need be be willing to reformat my computer if you gentlemen feel that may resolve the issue, but i don't want to proceed with that unless absolutely necessary.

The tech who came over last Saturday replaced the modem with a new one, so i dont think the problem is the modem per say. And i do use a router, but i have taken that out as being a possible problem as i've directly connected pcs to modem and still received packet loss.

Any help offered is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Navi,

What type of modem do you have now, i.e (Surfboard). Model number as well. Was this similar to your old modem?

On Saturday, December 17, 2011 a "highly" trained technician will be coming to my home to help resolve this issue. He is going to be re-wiring my apartments cable lines for my cable modem, and perhaps switching out my modem again if its deemed necessary.

I've already changed my Ethernet cables from modem to PC and i continue to receive packet loss. I also took my router out of the equation since i am running modem straight to PC when i game.

I do appreciate everyone's assistants on this topic of via private message. It is greatly appreciated, and if you have any suggestions for me to bring up with the technician please feel free to let me know.

Thanks for all the assistance gentlemen.

Have multiple pc's ready to demonstrate the issue on. The technician will try to pin it on hardware or some user related issue if possible.

By chance is your provider Cox Communications? That is my hotel's provider here in Virginia and I cannot keep an active connection (although I'm sure it is the hotels fault, I was just wondering).

make sure to take ping tests with multiple computers.

And I believe his provider is Time Warner, though I can attest that cox (at least for me) is pretty shoddy.

Guest Navi491

Well gentlemen, i have discovered what my issue is.

My ISP, timewarner cable, in new york was having an AREA issue within my area and that is why i was receiving my insane packet loss issue.

The only way they realized this and believed me about my packet loss was for me to CALL them during one of my packet loss fits and have them observe it LIVE.

So anyone having my same issue, this is perhaps the best way to get your ISP to take your seriously and confirm if its a problem on their end or your end.

Also i got credited for 50% for everyday i have had the issue since i reported it. So anyone having a similar issue call your ISP and inform them even if you SUSPECT their may be an issue so that its in the records and once they confirm they have a problem they will credit your account starting from that day.

Thank you to everyone who stepped up and helped me out with this issue. I truly appreciate everyone's help and patience with me during this problem.

As it stands my internet issues have not been resolved, but my ISP is aware of it and will be making efforts to repair it. Until it is repaired i will be credited 50% off for everyday until the issue is resolved.

Thank you gentlemen, and have a nice day.
