I found the chipset using intel's chipset identification utility, the rest is from SIW Here are my specs Intel Pentium D 830 3.00GHz LGA775(FSB speed 800mhz) Intel 945 Express chipset family Nvidia GT 240 Kingston 4GB DDR2 PC2-5300 Bios - AO3 375W Stock PSU What is the best CPU i can hope to upgrade to?, i was thinking of going dual core but im not sure, any ideas?

LG775 has large verity of cpu that is good. I have a old q6600 that my wife uses that is still running with no problem. Look into a Q series meaing quad cores., Q 8300 or Q9300. which are around 120 to 160 US dollars. Also once u get into Quad cores Ur mobo needs more Power and Voltage. For dual cores get the E8400. make sure your mobo has 12v 8 pin for CPU power and check the voltage on the CPU and see if your mobo can handle it. But if you are spending around 200 dollar on a CPU i rather get a Phenom II with Decent Mobo. Which usually comes to around 200 Bucks or less.

Theres a major problem with upgrading the motherboard though, its a dell case, and its BTX form factor, meaning there is almost no motherboards available that support anything decent from AMD

The socket is different.

Like Senth said, I would something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103843&Tpk=amd%20440 $85 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128376&cm_re=gigabyte_motherboard-_-13-128-376-_-Product $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147153&cm_re=case-_-11-147-153-_-Product $40 Total $205 I would also recommend you getting a new PSU. Can probably get a 500w for around $50. Then reuse your ram, gpu.

Hmnn i may wait a few more weeks and replace my entire computer, this upgrade isent really looking worth it since my computer is pretty old anyway. I should have $1000 in a few weeks so hopefully i can buy a better computer with that than upgrade.

as Thieving said before to me. AUS part mark up price is crazy. Right now the US to AUS is 1 US to 1.18 AUs even tho its very close to 1 to 1. I checked AU computer sites. A average 140 dollar US Cpu goes for 210. I think its more expensive to make a computer then buy prebuild in AUS. Ofcourse here in the states its the opposite. Me and thieving checked every possiblity. I think i have to say is to Buy a whole new system then gambling on merging old and new parts.

Maybe someone in the states will order all his parts from newegg then ship it to him haha. Prolly be like $50 for the shipping (guess) but might be cheaper. But normally when u want a CPU upgrade u'll probably have to upgrade mobo. Unless u got AMD since I believe the AM2,AM2+, and AM3 socket is the same. But intel sockets have changed every generation. Even the core i3 has a different socket than the i5 and i7.
