Guest avicJ
I believe I need to update my cpu but not sure what I should update or if I should just build a new one. My computer runs everything pretty good but I think it should be better. My bf3 is slow now a days and I want to up my computer for bf4 so im thinking all I really need is memory and a new graphics card. Plus I really have no budget and don't mind putting more money down for a better computer but I think im just better off upgrading this one can anyone guide me in the right direction? Guest RhinoTech
Basic upgrading concept: Motherboard (like a chassis of a car, determines capabilities of the vehicle/pc) CPU (the "brain" of the computer) RAM (think of it as quicker access to stored data, like having your stuff out on your desk [ram] rather than in the backpack/locker [hdd/ssd]) Storage (backpack/locker of data, hdd has moving parts inside [shorter lifespan] and is cheaper per GB, SSD offers quicker read/write with no moving parts but more $$ per GB) GPU (pretty colors & stuffs) Sound Card (paired with an equal amplifier results in amazing sound clarity) So first thing you'll need to know is what type of motherboard (MOBO), the mobo restricts what you can use (intel or amd cpu, pci slots, ram slots, etc). Depending on the mobo, you may be able to replace/upgrade your GPU (graphics card), CPU, & Ram. You can install additional storage drives, but to make a new storage drive with the operating system (windows) on it will require delicate procedures (you can mirror/copy your whole drive onto the new one, providing the new drive has enough space; or you will have to recover your partitions, create back-ups, or start from completely scratch). After you've figured out what can be upgraded, post here again (or if you have any questions to my information/things in general). (I've added a SSD and what I used to think was lag issues were gone. My game runs smoother than I ever expected on an SSD, and I still need to upgrade my CPU. Unfortunately I bought an AM3 socket instead of AM3+, so I'm limited) My recommendations are to get a high-end SSD for your games to load on, graphics or CPU upgrade (depending on which is weakest). Guest cepwin
Yes, I agree with LCpl that the first thing is what you have now. If you have at least an i5 processor (CPU) you will likely be able to upgrade other components and improve your performance. In addition to the SSD (which is faster than traditional drives), RAM and the GPU are the biggest bang for the buck. One FYI...big GPU's usually require a serious power supply so if you get a new video card check the power requirements and if necessary upgrade your power supply as well. A final consideration is the case. serious video cards are big and may not fit in a smaller case. Hope this helps! If you can post what you have we can give you more detailed advice. Also, what is your budget? Once we know what you're working with we can better advise on your options.
