i have 2x xfx 5870 XXX OC version on Crossfire. Both OCEd and at 16x. compare to 400 Nvidia series ATI runs way cooler. 5800 series idles at 35C peak at 70c 400 Series idles at 60c peak at 110c Ati problem is the driver not the hard ware. They do have fixes but still buggy. as for Nvidia 400 series Hardware issue but good Driver. I rather pick good hardware over driver cuz driver can always be updated. I see alot of RMA post about overheating issue with 400 series. I would recommend getting 5770 or even 5750 crossfired if ur mobo can handle it. Plus 400 series eats almost 40 to 55 % load of ur PSU. SO also need a PSU upgrade. as for 5800 series only eat 20 to 40% My Video card is already Factory OCEd but i manually oced more with ATI Overdrive. The program is limited to how much u can oc but its more then enough for me. another good program is MSI afterburner. Also OC with Bios increase PCI bus and NB voltage. 5970 is pretty much 2 5870 chip on one card. Which cause overheating. If u really wanna see a Massive GPU check out Asus ROG ARES 5870. msrp 1300$ XFX has lifetime warranty on every card that usually make them cost little more the other brand. but Sapphire and Asus are 2 other good brand that make ATI gpu. here are the hierarchy of Video cards http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/graphics-card-geforce-radeon,2646-7.html

I would consider to SLi my card with another 9800GTX+ but my board doesn't support SLi only CrossFire. It was a reason it was cheaper since u have to pay extra for NVIDIA SLI support. So i'm sticking with the 5830 or 5850 if I see a good discount. I'm going to keep an eagle eye on newegg for 1-2 weeks and see if I can find a crazy deal.

I just got a ATI Radeon 5870 today for $400. Was trying to get a 5850 but there all sold out around me. I really don't see you getting a 5850 for less then 280 due to its being sold out at most the the top stores around me still. I would check in on amazon and eBay for a used one that someone is getting ride of so they can buy another one. $274 is the lowest i see. I'll just settle for the 5830, its still a step up and a few years updated from my 9800GTX+. Maybe if I sell that one for like $100 to someone then I could bump myself up. Any takers? She runs BC2 with highest settings. Also it has to be on Newegg since i got a $50 gift card from there.

I dont' think it's worth the money. If you already bought then oh well. If you didn't I'll be glad to give you more insight.

I haven't bought anything yet. Like I said I am going to troll newegg until I find a good deal. According to that site Senth posted its still a step up from my 9800GTX+. But like I said if I see a crazy good deal on a 5850 i'll get one but as of now they are all at least $50 to expensive for me.

Well, I'd just strongly consider the 5770. You can find deals for under $150. I got mine for $130 about 6 months ago... If you look at the chart Senth posted, you can see the 5830 and the 5770 are on the same level. But it's a lot cheaper. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-radeon-hd-geforce-gtx,2676-7.html If you can crossfire two, it even outperforms a 5850. But generally speaking they say only to upgrade your vid card if you go up 3 tiers... which would be a 5870 for you lol

Alright we'll i've looked into it more. I was originally looking at 5770's but it seemed that the 5800s were better. Although across the board these look fairly close http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125327 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125317 Besides the SPU's they are almost identical. The biggest difference is the memory bus size which is 256 bit in 5830 (and my current card) and only 128 in 5770. But I also found this. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/284037-33-5770-5830-head-head Which puts the 5770 below the 5830 by a large margin. The stats say the 5830 is a better buy which makes the 5850 even better if i can just find a good deal.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-5830,2564.html This is another good article. The problem with benchmarks is they don't really show real world application. I wouldn't say the 5830 is worse than the 5770, because it's probably better since you are paying more. I guess I'm just saying, bang for the buck the 5770 is probably best. But I think either way you're gonna get a good card :)

Yea, after reading that im going to keep my eyes out for a 5850 it seems the 5830 is just a cheap version of the 5850 with few big issues. I hate buying older models so instead of crossfireing 2 5770s or something I will just look for a nice deal on the 5850. I'm not in a rush so I'll just keep my eyes peeled.

This showed up in newegg today. It looks very tempting and the reviews say its a beast out of the box. What do you guys think? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127500 To clarify I have a $50 newegg giftcard and $43 in birthday money. So take $93 off the final price and thats what i'm paying out of pocket. I would like that number to be around $175ish but willing to bend on a really good deal. EDIT: AHHH i just saw that only has one display port, I have 2 monitors so this would be a deal breaker...damn, guess i gatta keep looking.

looks like a nice card. are you really planning on using 2 display ports? what monitor do you have with display port in? unless you are planning to eyefinity just use 1 hdmi and 1 dvi.

As of right now I have two 19" monitors I use side by side. This is key. Since Im a programmer and all around multitasker 2 monitors is a must for me. Both monitors are too old to have HDMI they only have VGA and DVI inputs. I was looking at the 285 and i almost went with it since thats what I did with my current card when the 285 was the top of the line. Only problem is I want a card that supports DX11 and if possible PCIe 2.1. I just want a card thats updated now so in a few years it won't be worthless for new games.

Ok now i've been looking at this card for a few days now and I think since its OC'd by Gigabyte I wouldn't have to worry about doing it myself and that $20 rebate is good only for another 2 days. Do you think this is a good deal or should I just keep waiting? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125318 Decayed you could just get on xfire and we could chat about it. If you're at work like me you can just use Pidgin and get the gfire plugin. Its what i use on my Ubuntu box here at work.

Yo, so your monitors dont' even have display port. Not sure if you are confusing display port with a "display output". Or maybe you meant to say 1 DVI port. Anyway, display port is a vesa standard which was hoped to replace dvi/hdmi as the standard. This didn't work out all that well, since most monitors still do not come equipped with displayport in. You should be fine with the MSI card, Just get a DVI to HDMI converter for the one HDMI out which is a couple of bucks, check monoprice.com or meritline.com Don't get a 285. DX 11 is good. And ATI cards consume less energy. All around better. Yeah drivers are a bit of an issue at times, but considering a 58xx is better than a 480 for gaming (or at least on par), I really wouldn't go with a 285. The gigabyte card is not bad. OCing graphics cards are overrated imo. It's really up to you, i'm sure you will try to OC the factory OC'd card anyway :P That about 13 more bucks, for something you can do yourself. Don't have much experience with either for vid cards. Gigabyte is pretty good about RMAs though. I have a Sapphire myself.

OK well just to compare I looked at the GTX 470's which that chart puts equal to the 5850's With promo code and $20 mail in rebate the total is $249 minus the $93 i got for birthday = $156 for a new GTX 470 card. EDIT: I bought the 470. It seemed people recommended that over the 5850 even tho it runs a little hotter, i have a pretty cool system and a huge case so I think I'll be ok. After the newegg deals and my giftcard i paid $220 to newegg then the mail in rebate brings it to $200.

Well my wonderful girlfriend got me a $50 newegg gift card. Then I got 2 checks lol one from my grandparents for $23 dollars (just turned 23) and my godfather who gave me $20. My parents also sent me $23 cash but thats already spent lol. I'm glad u approve lol I was worried I might've screwed something up and bought some one that only has Chinese inputs or something haha. I'm kinda glad I switched back to NVIDIA just because Ive heard horror stories about ATI drivers. I want to thank MG.Darmine for making me take a second look at my purchase. He is so good with words
(12:41:28 PM) MG.Darmine=US=: radion (12:41:33 PM) LT.Xander=US=: yea (12:41:34 PM) MG.Darmine=US=: = not relaible (12:41:41 PM) LT.Xander=US=: says u (12:41:45 PM) MG.Darmine=US=: ok (12:41:53 PM) LT.Xander=US=: lol no ive read about the drivers (12:41:59 PM) MG.Darmine=US=: what ever help you sleep at night
