So some of you are probably wondering what I've been up to recently and how come i haven't been all that active.
OMG WTF I"VE BEEN MISSING THIEVINGSIX SO MUCH, HES THE BEST, I WANT HIS AWESOME SKILLS AND NATURAL INBUILT AIMBOT!!
So here is the answer :D. Over the past 2 and a half weeks I've been on holidays and after the second day of my holidays i got really bored so i decided to build a computer case with inspiration from portal, the only game i can never beat. A photo of the weighted storage cube, what will become my computer case. Now i decided to use this as my inspiration because everyone has already built the companion cube but it seems nobody is interested in this lovely storage cube. I wonder why? This is my first time building a computer case. I've built other stuff like a model plane and a perpex book holder so i have some experience with materials and methods. Suggestions and ideas are welcome! A few things that are still in need of attention: 1) Air vents are made by offsetting the middle aperture logos by 5mm spacers at the moment, but will see if it can be made more authentic in some way 2) The back connectors of the motherboard doesn't have access in the preliminary design yet since I couldn't yet figure out how I can do it without cutting out a huge section of the cube. 3) Placement of power/reset buttons as well as power/hdd LED's have not been determined. Thinking of using a stainless steel panel mount push button hidden somewhere... Oh, the specs of the design is: Intel D510MO Mini ITX DDR2-800 PC6400 2GB Dimm Dlink Wireless N Adapter Seagate 80GB Sata Zalmann ZM-F1 Plus x2 picoPSU-120W The inner box frame will be made from Medium Density Fiberboard(MDF), the corners will be handmade from 16mm MDF. I've followed a tried and true way of mounting the motherboard on hex spacers in a multi-tiered system. I've already started building and im well into the project at the moment. I haven't ordered the components yet though. Heres what it should look like Im not terrible great with sketch up so this is someone else's render of what the tier system will look like. Mnnnnnn Tasty jigsaw!! Testing out the good ol' paints(the one with nothing is clear coat) The cutting out of the sides!

well as air vents you could as you said offeset the aperture logos.. and air inlets can be little slits all around.. maybe hide the start and reset buttong under the top aperture logo and just use one side as connection side.. e.g. backside of the cude.. even regular cases look ugly from behind.

Yeah maby ill do that :D The painting of the sides! Who said a can of tomatoes some soda and laundry detergent don't work together? The finished box with test corners I cant believe i forgot to post the sketch up i made of the cube, whoops :D I havent been able to find superbright orange led's for the orange bits in the render so im seeing if i can use a couple of diffused ones but i might have to increase the voltage a bit. Starting the corners, took about 8 hrs to cut out these. There is 24 in total Finished the glueing of the corners Found some gaps in the glue work so i filled them with a simple mixture of sawdust and pva and sanded it down. Yeah you saw dog food in the background, Yeah my dog is fighting a rival army, Yeah he looks unhappy but hes really having a ball. You can tell hes a boy by the way he holds that toy triumphantly. The "i didn't just destroy the toy you paid $10 for" face 6Hrs of work right here, sanded down all the corners to make that nice edge look Started sanding the other sides down, each piece takes about an hour. This is a comparision. There is 8 pieces :| I know theres a lot of pictures :D but this brings you up to speed at where i am at in the project, everything posted from now is real time updates.

Thats sick. As for the fans make sure you keep an airflow, if I was doing thing (i couldn't because im not creative) i'm sure I'd set the fans up like this, the arrows being airflow. <---|________|----> Which would make bad airflow, you should set them like ---->|___________|------> which would keep the system much cooler. This is awesome btw.

If i were to use only one fan should it exhaust or intake?. If i were to use 2 fans intake at the bottom exhaust at the top right?

yea that upper fan needs to blow out and the lower one needs to blow in. I would suggest 3 so it would be like this ....._____^____ -->|_________|-->

well if you have vent slits and one fan i say make that fan exhaust.. and let the cool air be sucked in through the slits... if you have two fans.. yeah top is exhaust as warm air rises uptop naturally.

Ok so its that time of day, while most of you sleep its, Update time! Another shot of the corner. Bask in their uber glory, here is the corners, each took me around 4 hrs :D hopefully the next picture will show you their full power! Here is the picture most of you were waiting for, the preview :D! Ok so now i have to decide on the power button. Im thinking of just mounting it the back hole through an acrylic sheet where the motherboard IO's will be. Anyone know of a good looking power button? Tomorrows update will most likely be the edging of the cube :D

Nope its mdf with paper on it, reason being is that the pieces were quite small to actually draw up and i need to draw it up 24 times so i printed copies of the pieces and pasted them down and used them as a guide to cut. Tomorrows picture wont have white bits :D

Unfortunately most of today was spent finishing edges and sanding, filling gaps and putting on a second coat of paint on the corners, not much to photograph. On the other hand i made a cookie out of MDF and PVA, you simply mix it up until its of a dough like consistency, put it into a cookie shape and wait for it to dry, easy!, i wish i had taken a photo though. It was a real interesting use of all the spare sawdust i had collected. Heres the edges cut and glued and ready for sanding

So today i finished of sanding the edges and painting the edging's of the cube Painting those edgings. Ok so heres my problem do you guys think that grey in the picture is too dark? should i go for a lighter grey or a totally different color? suggestions?
